Snowdonia Country Cottages launch new self catering rental format making larger cottages more affordable for smaller parties.

Marie & Ray Forster owners of Snowdonia Country Cottages in North Wales have launched an innovative new way to make larger cottages available to couples and smaller party visitors at a much lower costs.

There are numerous large properties (sleeping 6 +) which have low occupancy rates outside the main season because couples and smaller parties cannot afford to rent them says Marie.

The normal way that the large holiday companies get around the problem is to offer a discount for lower occupancy. However, this does not help the owner who is reducing his price without reducing his costs as he is still making the whole house available. Hence a lot of owners do not take up this option leaving the property empty.

Snowdonia Country Cottages are trying something different! Instead of offering the whole house to couples they are offering, in the case of a cottage sleeping 6, 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom instead of 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms locking off the other bedrooms. This then enables them, for example, to shut off radiators in rooms which are not being used and to reduce cleaning costs.

Some people scoffed when we came up with the idea saying it would not work as visitors would want access to the whole house, says Marie. However, in the case of ‘Ty Gilfach’ our Grade II Listed farmhouse in Snowdonia the ‘30% couples discount’ and ‘20% discount for parties of 4’ has generated bookings for the property which would never have been acquired and no one is complaining about the reduced number of bedrooms and bathrooms ... just smiling because they have a much more substantial property to stay in!

‘The Butlers’ who stayed in Ty Gilfach recently commented: “We were delighted with the discount offered as we couldn’t have afforded to holiday in the property if it was at the full rate for 6 people. The fact a bedroom and bathroom was locked off was absolutely no problem to us and it enabled us to stay in this stunning farmhouse which we would otherwise not have been able to do. Other companies should look at renting by the room for self catering properties as Marie & Ray have done.
